Does the past exist if no one remembers it? How can it be proven? Debate this point after reviewing O'Brien's argument.

Does the past exist if no one remembers it? How can it be proven? Debate this point after reviewing O'Brien's argument.

Of course the past exists even if no one remembers it. History is history, you can't go bakc and change everything or prevent anything to happen. Its not like everything is run like a movie, where you can pause rewind and cut somee pieces that you don't care too much for. Its just the same as saying oh well i don't remember what i had for breakfast the other day, guess it didn't happen. Or I don't remember the day we went to war, so the troops are not there and its all peaceful. No it doesn't work that way. Just because you don't remember everything detail by detail doesn't mean it doesn't exist or never happened.

POWER

What is power? What makes a person or group powerful? Write a journal entry discussing this and include some pictures(4-5) from the web to show "power."

The way Big Brother sees power, he takes advantage of it. He thinks that he is the ultimate power and that everyone is undermining his authority. Once someone is given power, no matter what in anyway they abuse it. Once someone gets power they think that they are better or of higher class than the rest. Once that is put into their head, the ball keeps rolling and increasing in the abuse of power. A person or a group become powerful by standing out and taking that extra step. Showing their strength and blending the weaknesses. Before they get the ultimate power people often, try to win others on their side.
This picture shows that the government or People of "higher status" misuse their power that they have. Its the same situation with Big Broher, he is going to extremes to have the ultimate power.

"Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past."

"Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past."

Big Brother is not the one who controls Winston's past nor future. Its up to Winston to decide what his next step is, whether it is cooperating with Big Brother or not. Yeah Big Brother can decide to banish Winston or whatever, but that doesn't have ot stop Winston. Like I said he is in control of his actions and what he should do. It was his decision to do the deeds taht he did and he saw that being caught was coming. I just don't believe that Big Brother controls his past or future.

WWJD???

What would Julia Do???

I don't think that Julia is going to freak out or spazz out. But I think that she will come to realization that she is caught and in a deep hole. She seems to have it was coming sooner or later attitude. It wasn't a shock to her or anything new. But the way she is not freaking out kinda seems like she is going to get a rude awakening. It almost seems like Julia is in denial and doesn't cope with the fact that they were caught. But then again, Julia is one of those rebellious types and doesn't care that they were caught. Its just like an oh well we did wrong and I already knew it was coming, whatever deal. Julia is calmly accepting it. I dont' think that she will give up Winston. That is questionable though, because you don't quite know if she is undercover and working for Big Brother. I have my doubts on Julia and don't know if I completely trust her. The test of true love and trust is upon Winston and Julia.

If I were Winston...

Winston has already broken enough laws as is. And if I were in his shoes, I would continue with the law breaking. Create a bold statement. Overthrow Big Brother. Well, in Winstons case, if he were to face vanishment. Then so be it, I would run away. Live off the land or wherever i could get away from the utopia of Big Brother. But before, running away from my problems I would try to investigate as much as I can. And then continue breaking the laws. Set an example for the others and show them that I can make it out of there alive. Prove that Big Brother doesn't have the power over everyone. So I would think that its every man for himself. Put my life on the line, so I could write in my journal and continue to break the rules. If I were Winston I would probably have been vanished a long time ago. But thats a whole other story.
Winston should continue on, investigate and keep "breaking the laws" of Big Brother. He must be careful, if he wants to keep his life. The race of his life is on.
